With a rich history and classic elegance, The Mayflower Hotel is Washington, DC’s most luxurious and long-standing landmark. Since 1925, this legendary hotel has dazzled its VIP guest list with Presidential Inauguration Balls, personalized service, and presidential luxury guest suites designed by some of the world’s premier interior designers.
The Mayflower Hotel is located 800 meters from the White House. It is a member of the Historic Hotels of America. The rooms at The Mayflower Hotel, Autograph Collection have a modern design, plush bedding, marble baths, high-speed internet, and luxury accoutrements. As the only Marriott Autograph Collection Hotel in Washington D.C. guest will enjoy a historic grandeur and contemporary style all within a perfect backdrop of historic downtown. Guest can enjoy flavorful cuisine and hand-crafted cocktails in a brasserie-style environment at Edgar Bar and Kitchen. The hotel also has an on-site floral boutique and a newsstand. This hotel is also within walking distance of both Dupont Circle and 2.7 km from The National Mall.
For The Mayflower Hotel assignment, we were tasked with photographing the lobby, guest rooms, restaurants, food, and beverage, as well as getting aerial drone footage of the entire hotel and surrounding location.
Our strategic challenge was navigating the security detail in the business district being in such close vicinity to the White House in downtown D.C. We approached this assignment with a creative mindset because we didn’t have access to a helicopter due to safety in the area surrounding the White House. We needed to get creative; to be resourceful.
We started out by mapping out all of the buildings across from the Mayflower Hotel using Google Maps and Street View. Using these maps, we were able to see exactly where we could get aerial shots without trespassing and avoiding potential security issues.
We approached the leasing agent of the neighboring building and provided our media credentials to see if we could gain access to their roof for aerial shots of the hotel and downtown Washington D.C. After verification, he allowed us to get some great aerial shots from the rooftop as well as views of the White House. However, within minutes of getting the footage, we were approached by the building engineer letting us know that we had to leave due to security concerns for incoming dignitaries and top brass law enforcement arrivals into the area.
Shooting in a high-profile environment can be a challenge, but on this particular shoot, we were able to deliver with expert precision—capturing the interior and exterior elements of this historic landmark hotel and showcasing the charm of downtown D.C.
The location provided a rich history, making for a unique photography experience. We had to be flexible, adaptable, and resourceful to capture every creative angle and visual possible within secure parameters.
